Garbage from around the country will be trucked into Hernando County
Posted February 16, 2010 @ 3:10 pm

C & D Dump site next to Withlacoochee State Forest. The DEP is considering issuing a permit to Out of Bounds Inc. and Croom Investments LLC. They will make there decision on Friday 19th 2010 for a Construction & Debris Landfill to be put right above the aquifer in Hernando County. Some county residents are currently fighting this C & D Landfill. If this dump is approved, semi trucks of construction trash will come from around the country to dump their waste above our Aquifer system. This system supplies fresh drinking water to several large cities including Savannah, Brunswick, Georgia and Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Orlando & St. Petersburg, Florida. Not to mention, our wells here in Brooksville, Spring Hill and Weeki Wachee.

Construction Debris including but not limited to: gypsum (the main component of drywall) including Chinese Drywall, wood (from buildings), concrete, asphalt (from roads and roofing shingles), metals, bricks, glass, plastics, salvaged building components, (doors, windows, and plumbing fixtures anything from old houses or demolished buildings) trees, stumps, earth and rock from clearing sites & debris from disaster stricken areas. Some of these materials contain harmful chemicals: Lead paint, asbestos, arsenic, sulfate, iron, manganese, cadium, aluminum, chloride. All of which can leach into the aquifer. Also all these materials decomposing together will produce a gas called hydrogen sulfide, which has a bad rotten egg smell and causes health problems, this will be a serious problem for the restaurants and other businesses in close proximity to the C & D landfill near interstate 75 & Hwy. 50. This will have an impact on the whole state, not just Hernando County. Anyone that uses a well could have potential health problems. This has been proven in other areas with this type of landfill.
The semi trucks hauling trash on State Road 50 will create a safety hazard to local traffic, children, equestrians, hikers and bikers. The trucks will be entering the dump at the rate of 60 to 70  per day. The air quality from the dust and the emissions & the noise pollution from the semi trucks coming and going is not what Brooksville needs.
Residents, Farmers, Ranchers, Equestrians, Hikers, campers, hunters and Bikers of Croom Forest, all need to stop this dump from ruining our Aquifer, endangering protected species and having a very negative impact on the way of life for the local residence and business, anyone that uses the Withlacoochee State forest. This is a sanctuary that should not be destroyed.  Here is an article that was published in Hernando Today:
